Bravely Expecting: CNN's Clarissa Ward's Pregnancy While Covering War in Ukraine

Clarissa Ward, a prominent and fearless reporter for CNN, has been reporting from the frontlines of war since February 2022. However, she recently began a unique new journey for her—one with an unborn baby in tow. The mother-to-be is onsite in Ukraine as she awaits her third child’s arrival.

Clarissa has already been the face of many ongoing late night talks shows, and is a pioneer for female reporters everywhere. But even more impressive is the courage she continues to show as a pregnant war correspondent.

In an exclusive statement to People Magazine, the future mother said that “being pregnant on assignment [in Ukraine] has been quite challenging”. She has spent over twelve weeks reporting on news since the war began in February 2022 and even though she is not visiting any frontline locations, there are still “long drives and severe cold” that are taxing on her body as well as her mental wellbeing. That doesn’t stop her from having perspective though; she says that “thousands of Ukrainian women are living this experience every day” which keeps her motivated despite being 20 weeks pregnant.

Her second trimester has been remarkably kind to her thus far with no nausea and plenty of energy; although she also candidly admits that she is not yet “huge and a bit fed up as I tend to get in the third trimester” like so many other mothers-to-be. Her husband Philipp von Bernstorff must certainly be excited; they are already parents to two sons Caspar and Ezra—both aged two and four respectively—and they will soon welcome another son into their family come springtime! She quips that it is both “thrilling but petrifying” knowing that they will be outnumbered by their boys alone but adds wisely that “boys always love their mamas.”

It certainly does make one wonder what inspired this incredible feat of strength, making history as one of few women to report from frontline war zones while expecting a child? She shares that partly it was because she was an only child growing up so she felt compelled to have a larger family; adding more children to those already raising more than one seems like a stab at normalizing what it means to be a mother for many other women out there who struggle with decisions about careers versus parenting, or worse—careers versus getting pregnant period! The struggles imposed by societal pressures weigh heavy on many women expecting children but again, Clarissa proves them wrong by showing the world what can be done when we push ourselves beyond our assumed limits while taking care of ourselves in the process.

Clarissa Ward continues to inspire us all with her courage during pregnancy while simultaneously doing something extraordinary with her career; here’s hoping we can all take cues from this amazing woman!
